(Meeting point: Hotel Ariston entrance at 14:50)

The city  of Paestum was founded in the 7th century BC by Greek colonists from Sybaris and was originally known as Poseidonia.  Paestum is famous for its well-preserved ancient Greek temples, which are among the best-preserved examples of Greek architecture in the world. The three main temples in Paestum are the Temple of Hera, the Temple of Neptune, and the Temple of Ceres (also known as the Temple of Athena). The temples were built in the 6th and 5th centuries BC and were dedicated to the Greek gods and goddesses. The Temple of Hera is the oldest and largest of the three temples, and it is also the most well-preserved. It was built in the 6th century BC and is believed to have been dedicated to Hera, the wife of Zeus. The Temple of Neptune, built in the mid-5th century BC, is also well-preserved and is dedicated to the god of the sea. The Temple of Ceres, built in the late 6th century BC, is the smallest of the three temples and is dedicated to the goddess of agriculture and fertility. In addition to the temples, Paestum also has a museum that houses a collection of artifacts from the ancient city. The museum contains a variety of items, including pottery, jewelry, and sculptures, many of which were excavated from the city’s tombs. One of the most famous exhibits in the museum is the Tomb of the Diver, a painted tomb that depicts a young man diving into the sea. The tomb is believed to date back to the 5th century BCE and is considered one of the finest examples of Greek painting from that time period.
